From the DAWGHouse…
You Are Not Auditioning to Be His Child
In a world driven by performance and achievement, it’s easy to assume that our relationship with God works the same way—that if we act good enough, pray hard enough, or clean up well enough, we might just earn His approval. But Scripture offers a radically different truth…
You are not auditioning to be God’s child.
You either are His child by grace through faith, or you are not. There is no tryout. No callback. No resume required.
The Apostle Paul puts it clearly in Galatians 4:4-7: “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’ So, you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.”
This passage is foundational.
We are not trying to become children of God by our effort—we are adopted into His family through Jesus Christ. Adoption isn’t about the child earning a spot in the family. It’s about the love and choice of the One doing the adopting.
Yet, many of us still live as if we’re on a stage, nervously hoping God is pleased enough to keep us around. That mindset is rooted in fear, not faith. And God does not call His children to live in fear. Romans 8:15 echoes this: “For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’”
God is not holding a clipboard, waiting for us to mess up so He can disqualify us.
Jesus already passed the test we never could. On the cross, He declared, “It is finished.” The performance was complete, flawless, holy, and sufficient. Through Him, we have peace with God (Romans 5:1).
This doesn’t mean that our choices don’t matter, or that obedience is irrelevant. Children of God do grow, mature, and seek to please their Father—not to earn His love, but because they already have it. Our good work is the fruit of being His child, not the prerequisite.
Imagine the freedom that comes from knowing you’re secure in your Father’s love. That no matter your past, your fears, or even your failures, you belong to Him—not because you performed well, but because Jesus performed perfectly on your behalf.
If you find yourself trying to “measure up,” remember the gospel.
The Christian life is not an audition—it’s a relationship, rooted in grace and sealed by the blood of Christ. God doesn’t need your perfection; He invites your trust.
So, step off the stage. The role of beloved child has already been given. Not because you earned it, but because Jesus did. Rest in that truth today.
“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” – 1 John 3:1
