The Many Attributes of God Can Be Overwhelmingly Beautiful

Wow. What a message from Pastor Pete this week.

Trying to comprehend God is like standing at the edge of the ocean. No matter how far you look, the horizon stretches endlessly. The waters roll in with unceasing rhythm, each wave unique yet part of the same whole. That’s what it feels like to consider the attributes of God—His holiness, love, justice, mercy, sovereignty, wisdom, and so many more. Together they don’t just describe Him; they reveal a breathtaking beauty that leaves us in awe.

The Bible doesn’t give us a single snapshot of God. Instead, it offers a mosaic.

One passage tells us He is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love (Exodus 34:6). Another reminds us He is just, righteous, and pure (Psalm 89:14). Still another declares His power and majesty, reminding us that He spoke creation into existence (Genesis 1).

At times, these truths may feel overwhelming. How can God be both infinitely merciful and perfectly just? How can He hold all authority and yet stoop to wash His disciples’ feet?

The answer isn’t found in choosing one attribute over another. It’s in seeing how all His attributes work together without contradiction. His justice doesn’t cancel His mercy. His holiness doesn’t diminish His love. His sovereignty doesn’t stifle His compassion. Instead, they weave together like threads in a tapestry, forming a picture more beautiful than we could ever design ourselves.

Think of how this touches daily life.

When we feel crushed by our own failures, His mercy meets us. When we are treated unfairly, His justice comforts us. When life feels uncertain, His sovereignty steadies us. When our hearts are lonely, His love fills us. The overwhelming nature of God’s attributes isn’t meant to confuse us but to reassure us that He is enough in every circumstance.

The apostle Paul once wrote, “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!” (Romans 11:33). Paul didn’t respond to God’s attributes with charts or formulas—he responded with worship. That’s our invitation, too. When we’re faced with the vastness of who God is, the right response isn’t to try to fit Him into our understanding, but to bow in wonder and trust.

The beauty of God’s attributes is that they never change.

Unlike shifting human emotions or inconsistent leaders, God’s character is steadfast. He has always been holy, always been just, always been merciful, always been love. What overwhelms us in this life will one day be the very thing that comforts us for eternity. In heaven, we won’t be frustrated by our inability to grasp His greatness—we’ll be freed to delight in it forever.

So, the next time you feel overwhelmed when considering who God is, let that sense of smallness turn into worship. The ocean of His attributes is not meant to drown you, but to surround you in beauty.

Dive deep, and you will find that every wave carries the same truth: our God is stunningly, overwhelmingly beautiful.

Freedom in the Savior,

Joe Bouch
