The Everlasting Father
Isaiah 9:6 beautifully portrays the coming Messiah with a series of names that describe His divine attributes and mission: “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder. And His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” Each title is rich with meaning, and “The Everlasting Father” reveals the eternal, fatherly care and love of Jesus Christ toward His people.

At first glance, the title “Everlasting Father” may seem puzzling, especially within the framework of the Trinity, where Jesus is distinct from God the Father. However, this title does not conflate the roles within the Godhead. Instead, it reflects Jesus’ relationship with His people and His eternal nature.
- “Everlasting” emphasizes His unchanging and eternal existence. Jesus declared, “Before Abraham was, I am” (John 8:58), affirming His eternal nature as God.
- “Father” describes His care, protection, and provision for those who belong to Him. In this context, “Father” is not a reference to His role within the Trinity but to His loving relationship with His people, as a father cares for and nurtures his children.
Jesus is the Everlasting Father because His love and care for believers are without end. As He says in John 10:28, “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.” His commitment to His people is steadfast and enduring.
Similarly, like a father who shields his children from harm, Jesus protects His people. He is the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for His sheep (John 10:11). He provides for every spiritual need, ensuring that His followers lack nothing essential for their faith journey. Indeed, Jesus embodies the tender qualities of a father. In Matthew 11:28–30, He invites the weary and burdened to come to Him, promising rest for their souls. His guidance is marked by gentleness and humility, reflecting the heart of a loving father.
As the Everlasting Father, Jesus secures eternal life for His people. His fatherly role extends beyond this earthly life, offering a place in His eternal kingdom. Revelation 21:4 paints a picture of this glorious future: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
So, what does The Everlasting Father mean to the men of Forge?
- We can rest in the assurance that Jesus’ love is everlasting. His care is not fleeting or conditional but is grounded in His eternal nature.
- The title “Everlasting Father” reminds the men of Forge that Jesus desires an intimate and personal relationship with us. He is not a distant deity but a present, nurturing Savior.
- In a world marked by change and uncertainty, the unchanging and eternal fatherhood of Jesus provides a source of hope and stability. His promise of eternal life anchors believers in the reality that their ultimate home is with Him.
As we reflect on the birth of Jesus, we celebrate not only the arrival of a Savior but also the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy. The Everlasting Father has come, offering eternal life, unending love, and a future secured in His glorious kingdom. Let us live each day in the joy and peace of knowing we are cared for by the One who will never leave us nor forsake us.
