Did God Enjoy Church Today?

Have you ever asked yourself that question? I haven’t. But recently when I was chatting with a friend after church, he said, “I wonder what God thought about our service today.” The statement hit me between the eyes.

We call the church the Bride of Christ. That’s not poetic fluff, it’s covenant language. It’s love language. It means the church matters deeply to God. And yet, if we’re honest, we’ve made a mess of things more times than we can count.

Division, performance, pride, distraction, shallow worship, watered-down truth – the list isn’t new, and it doesn’t surprise Jesus. But here’s the question that cuts through all of it:

Did God enjoy church today?

Not, Did I like the music?
Not, Was the sermon engaging?
Not, Did I feel something?

But did God enjoy it?

That question shifts everything because church was never designed primarily for us. Yes, we are built up, encouraged, taught, corrected, and sent. But at its core, the gathering of the church is about God. His glory, His presence, His Word, His people responding to Him together.

It made me wonder: what is Jesus looking for when His church gathers?  I thought about the question, a lot, as did Pastor Pete in his message this week at Forge. Here What I came up with…

Hearts that are fully His

Not just attendance, but affection. Not just voices singing, but hearts surrendered. Jesus said true worshipers’ worship “in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24). That means authenticity, not performance. It means we come to give, not just receive.

Reverence without pretense

God isn’t impressed by polished services if they lack humility. He’s not drawn to excellence divorced from dependence. A flawless production with no genuine hunger for Him is just noise. But a simple gathering marked by sincerity and reverence? I think that pleases Him.

Truth that is not compromised

Jesus isn’t honored when His Word is softened to fit culture. The church is called to hold fast to truth – not harshly, but faithfully. If the message avoids conviction, avoids repentance, avoids the cross, we may leave comfortable, but God is not pleased.

Love that is visible and real
“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35, NIV). Not tolerate. Not politely acknowledge. Love. Forgiving. Serving. Bearing with one another. If that’s missing, something essential is missing.

Dependence on Him, not ourselves
Programs don’t impress God. Strategies don’t move Him. He responds to dependence. To prayer, to desperation, to people who know they cannot manufacture what only the Spirit can produce.

So, did God enjoy church today?

If the room was full but hearts were distant, probably not.
If the music was strong but worship was hollow, likely not.
If truth was trimmed to avoid discomfort, no.
If love was absent, definitely not.

But…

if even a handful came hungry, and left full…
If repentance happened quietly in a seat…
If truth was spoken and received…
If someone chose forgiveness…
If Jesus, not people, was the focus…

Then yes. Absolutely yes.

Maybe the better question isn’t just evaluating the church – It’s examining ourselves. Did I give God something He delights in today?

Because the church isn’t just something we attend.

It’s something we are.
